Dear Alumni of GSES,
Great to see you.
Hello,
I'm Jeon Eui-chan, the 24th alumni president of Seoul National University Graduate School of Environmental Studies. I entered the master's course at the Graduate School of Environmental Studies in 1985 and entered the Ph.D. in 1988, and now I am a honorary chair professor at Sejong University.
Since its opening in 1973, the Graduate School of Environmental Studies has produced 513 PhDs and 3,312 Master's degrees in environmental, urban, transportation, and landscaping, and has trained 4,997 experts in the urban and environmental future strategy courses. I am proud to say the 5,000 graduates, led by (deceased) Professor Noh Yong-hee and trained by the best experts in each field, have played a major role in solving various urban and environmental problems caused by developmentalism when it was an emerging topic.
The situation that our graduates are active in various sectors of society proves that the multicultural and interdisciplinary converging education system, which the Graduate School of Environmental studies aimed for was effective at solving complex and interconnected urban and environmental problems. Now, as we launch the new half-century, to achieve carbon neutrality to solve climate change, our school and alumni are under the demands of the era to approach it from a global perspective beyond urban and regional issues.
The alma mater is literally the same place as a mother in learning. We were able to develop essential expertise through the courses of the Graduate School of Environmental Studies, and we were able to work in a society with that expertise. Learning and collaboration after graduation are important to solve complex environmental problems, including carbon neutrality, and collaboration with my alma mater, the Graduate School of Environmental Studies, and close cooperation between alumni, have become more important than ever.
In order to develop the Graduate School of Environmental Studies and strengthen cooperation among alumni, activation of ‘Urban and Regional Planning major Alumni Association’, ‘Transportation major Alumni Association’, ‘Environmental Management major Alumni Association’, ‘Urban Environmental Design major Alumni Association’, and ‘Urban and Environmental Executive Program Alumni’ should be premised. We would do our best to revitalize the entire alumni association of the Graduate School of Environmental Studies based on the revitalization of each majors and course alumni association, including ‘ESG Expert Program Alumni Association’, launched last year.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the historic opening of the Graduate School of Environmental Studies, which is an important time for our school and the alumni association. Sun-jin Yun, the new president of the Graduate School of Environmental Studies, also emphasized cooperation with the alumni association for the development of the school, so I would like to contribute to the launch of the new 50th anniversary of our school and do my best to develop the alumni association.
With all the other alumni, I would like to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Graduate School of Environmental Studies, which played a major role in the development of Korea in the past half-century, and I sincerely ask all alumni to join a spirited start for a new half-century of their alma mater. Finally, by appreciating all the past presidents who have led the alumni association until today, I would substitute my inaugural address.
Thank you.
March 2nd, 2023.
Sincerely, Jeon Eui-chan
